1. Moses Cleaveland wore many hats during his time, including General in the Continental Army, politician, and land surveyor. On July 22, 1796, Cleaveland and a surveying party landed near the mouth of the Cuyahoga River, where the employees named the location Cleaveland in his honor. Interestingly, Cleaveland never returned to the area again after the naming. Even better was when the settlement was renamed to what we know it to be as Cleveland today. This is likely attributable to a newspaper outlet called the Cleveland Advertiser in the early 1800's. The story goes that "Cleaveland Advertiser" wouldn't fit on their masthead, and decided to drop the "a," which in turn stuck as the city's name.

2. Cleveland holds the record for the first illuminated outdoor space. On April 29, 1879, Cleveland inventor Charles Brush showcased the first demonstration of outdoor street lighting, illuminating Public Square. Another lighting first was Cleveland installing the first electric traffic signal in 1914.

3. If you have ever had Chef Boyardee canned foods before, you can thank famous Cleveland chef Ettore Boiardi, the actual Chef Boyardee. Moving from New York City to Cleveland, Boiardi opened his own restaurant in 1924 and began to sell his own spaghetti sauce in cleaned milk bottles due to the number of customers asking him for samples and recipes. After meeting a couple of his customers, Maurice and Eva Weiner, Boiardi began to professionally can his food at scale.
